Chipotle Halts Pork Sales in Some Locations

pawsupPaws Up! To Chipotle for halting the sale of pork due to animal welfare concerns.

Although not a meat-free restaurant chain, Chipotle is well known for efforts to maintain humane and

sustainable business practices. Last year, NHES wrote about Chipotle’s decision to offer more vegan-friendly menu items. According to a recent news article, Chipotle has decided to halt the sale of pork in hundreds of locations after an audit revealed that one of the restaurant’s suppliers was not meeting the company’s standards  for humanely-raised pigs. For example, Chipotle stipulates that animals must have opportunities to be in the outdoors. While NHES is committed to promoting vegan and vegetarian diets, we applaud Chipotle for acting on the company’s commitment to upholding sustainable and humane farming practices.

Take Action: Consider a vegan or vegetarian diet and learn about the humane and health benefits of plant-based eating. If you decide to eat meat, reduce your intake and avoid factory-farmed meats. Contact Chipotle to express your support of humane treatment of farm animals.

Update to Chipotle Paws Up August 2013

pawsupvegan

Paws Up!
To Chipotle for integrating more vegan-friendly options into their menu.

In August 2013, we wrote about the need for more meat-free menu options at Chipotle. Chipotle recently announced that it will be offering its vegan Sofritas in the company’s northeastern restaurants, expanding its rollout of this menu item from last year in California.

We consumers can drive changes to restaurant menus if we let our voice be heard. If you want to see more plant-based items on a menu, let the restaurant you frequent know that. And then support those restaurants that are meeting your needs. If you are interested in learning more about plant-based diets, visit our information article and our plant-based recipes .

Take Action: Write a thank-you to the founder and CEO of Chipotle and urge his chain continue to offer plant-based menu items.

Vegan Soup at Some Chipotle Mexican Grills

Paws Up!
To Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. for adding vegan soup to the menu in the Chicago area.

According to a news source, “After years of a relatively unchanged menu, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. has added soup to its menu.

“Chicago-area restaurants…[were handing] out free samples of posole soup” recently. The soup is now an item on their menus. “The chain’s home market—Denver—is the only other market to have the new item, says Chairman and Co-CEO Steve Ells.”

Posole soup is “made without any animal products — with a tomato and hominy base, vegetables, and seasoned with spices like cumin and fresh herbs like oregano.”

Selecting a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle helps the planet, the animals, and us. Consider adding vegetarian/vegan options to your menu at home or at a restaurant.

Take Action: Send a note of thanks to Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc., for adding vegan soup to the menu. In addition, let the company know you want to see more vegetarian/vegan items on their menu. If your favorite restaurant doesn’t have several selections of vegetarian/vegan options on its menu, suggest the owner “get with the times.”

Tofu on the Menu

PawsUp

Chipotle Mexican Grill is now offering vegan selections throughout their Pacific Northwest restaurants.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is now offering vegan selections throughout their Pacific Northwest restaurants.

Paws Up!
To Chipotle for offering a new vegan option.

According to a news story, “Chipotle stores throughout the Pacific Northwest will begin selling Sofritas — shredded, organic tofu that’s braised with chipotle chiles and roasted poblanos and served in burritos, tacos or bowls.” The hope is, of course, the company will expand the offering to all of their restaurants nationwide.

As more of us are wanting a healthier option to animal products in our diets and as more of us realize the horrors factory farming visits on cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs, we hope to see more restaurants adding vegan options to their menus.

Visit our plant-based eating section to find recipes for delicious vegan dishes you can prepare in your own home.

Take Action: If you frequent Chipotle restaurants, thank them for offering this new vegan dish and urge them to offer more vegan options. When you visit restaurants, check out their vegan offerings and make polite suggestions of ways they can improve the number of vegan offerings. Additionally, you can find the CEO and corporate mailing address and write to restaurants you frequent, letting the company know of your interest in healthier and more humane eating.
