When you think about it…is the “right thing” really right ?

Factory farming methods of any kind are harmful to both the animals involved and the environment.

Factory farming methods of any kind are harmful to both the animals involved and the environment.

Some factory farms are trying to do the “right thing.” “Right” in this case means treating the animals with some respect, some dignity. “Right” means doing away with battery cages for egg-laying hens. “Right” means giving mother cows and their calves time to be together before the calf is sent off to a veal crate (males) or the dairy line (females). Do all these “rights” mitigate the wrongs done to billions of farmed animals? No, they don’t. The only way we humans can right the wrongs of factory farms is to stop supporting them, not encourage them to make the cages bigger or to give the animals a glimpse of sunshine or a taste of fresh air. As long as we buy animal products, we support an industry that is altogether harmful not just to the animals the industry raises and slaughters but to the environment and the quality of the lives in communities surrounding factory farms. When you think about it…it’s time to really do the “right thing.”
