Have you ever watched children watch in wonderment as a puppy or kitten plays or look into their eyes as they spy deer in the woods or squirrels scampering around a tree. Children are mesmerized by these strange creatures in their midst. And rarely do they wish to harm them. They merely wish to watch and if possible touch or pet them. We can learn much from how children engage with the natural world. How they express their joy at finding an inch worm or their excitement when they see fireflies. We should be like children and return to that time in our lives when the natural world and all the creatures therein excited us. As this holiday season closes, we are reminded of a verse from the Bible (Isaiah 11:6) “And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.” (American Standard Version) When you think about it…maybe we should follow the child in all of us and lead ourselves into a more humane world.
