Recently, President Barack Obama announced that the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline project requires further review to determine its true environmental costs.
Protecting our country’s resources is key to protecting our future and the future of our children, grandchildren, and beyond. The Keystone XL pipeline’s true environmental cost is huge, especially considering no one can guarantee there will be no spills from the pipeline. Without even that as a concern, construction itself could have irreversible effects on the natural environment, reduce water quality, and destroy pristine forests and wetlands. Construction (and spills) can cause habitats to be fragmented and lost and disrupt the migration of many animals and birds, regardless of where a pipeline is built.
By not rushing to approval but asking instead for the State Department to undertake a new and thorough review of the pipeline’s true environmental costs, President Obama has averted, for now, construction of what could be the most destructive environmental project to date.
Thank the president for requesting a new and thorough review. In addition contact your representatives and senators to let them know you want to protect the natural resources of this country by avoiding these mega pipeline construction projects. Instead, urge them to fund alternative sources of energy that will protect the planet and all the species who reside therein.
