Let’s Stop Slaughtering American Horses

The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011—what seems like a simple piece of legislation that should be acted upon immediately—seems to languish. Bills were introduced as long ago as 2004 and yet have not been enacted. HR 2966 was reintroduced in the House of Representatives recently. A companion bill, S 1176, was introduced in the Senate a couple months ago.

The identical bills clearly state the purpose is “to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for human consumption, and for other purposes.”

Further language reads: “(1) horses and other equines play a vital role in the collective experience of the United States and deserve protection and compassion; 2) horses and other equines are domestic animals that are used primarily for recreation, pleasure, and sport….”

The House bill has been referred to the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry. The Senate version has been referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Please write your senators and representatives along with the members of the committees. Let’s protect the horses of the United States.
